- Condo Boom in Downtown Edmonton
A fresh, young 26-year old named Raj Dhunna is the project manager for for Regency Developments. The local real estate development firm is headed by his father, Rakesh. Raj, a young MBA student, does not live the life of a normal grad student. Instead, he oversees three major downtown condo projects of his father's business.
The largest of the three projects is a 116-unit, 22-storey high rise being built corner of 104th Avenue and 105th Street. The condominium property, called Quest, mimics the chic upscale condo towers found in Vancouver's Yaletown or False Creek areas. The units are luxury condos which retail from $300,000 to $1 million plus! They claim that they have already sold 50% of the space in the building.
Raj attributes the pick up in sales to the visual appeal and overall quality of the building, and he says the firm is averaging two or three contracts a week. The firm sees tons of potential for the Edmonton real estate market over the next ten years and thinks the city can become a major metropolis.
For this reason, Regency is also pursuing two other construction projects. Their major high-rise condo complex consisting of over 900 units and three towers on the south side of Jasper Avenue has just been approved by the city, and work is expected to begin in early 2010. The development firm is also planning a 35-storey condo building at the corner of Jasper and 120th Street. They believe that these projects are an excellent way to attract many professionals to the city.
